Aan Bob Dylan is een eredoctoraat toegekend door het Berklee College of Music en bovendien heeft hij dat geaccepteerd.
Dylan wordt geëerd vanwege zijn ‘extraordinary influence on modern music’en ‘lifelong commitment to creative exploration.’
Beide gebeurtenissen zijn redelijk uniek, want het is de eerste keer sinds 1970 dat een Amerikaanse universiteit hem zo onderscheidt. Toen kreeg hij er een van de universiteit van Princeton en in 2004 een van de Schotse University of St. Andrews.
Rolling Stone meldt dat Dylan de plechtigheid op Princeton gebruikte als inspiratie voor zijn songs ‘Day of the locusts’.
De website citeert dit gedeelte van de songtekst: ‘Oh, the benches were stained with tears and perspiration.
The birdies were flying from tree to tree/There was little to say, there was no conversation/As I stepped to the stage to pick up my degree/And the locusts sang off in the distance/Yeah, the locusts sang such a sweet melody/Oh, the locusts sang off in the distance/Yeah, the locusts sang and they were singing for me.’
Ook heeft Rolling Stone er ‘Chronicles’ op nageslagen, het eerste deel van Dylan’s memires, hoewel er nooit delen op zijn gevolgd: ‘I was glad to get the degree, though.
I could use it. The very look and touch and scent of it spelled respectability and had something of the spirit of the universe in it. After whispering and mumbling my way through the ceremony, I was handed the scroll. We piled back into the big Buick and drove away.’
Dylan reageerde deze keer met een knipoog: ‘Thank you, Berklee College of Music, for bestowing on me this prestigious honor. What a pleasant surprise.
Who knows what path my career might have taken if I’d been fortunate enough to learn from some of the great musicians who taught at Berklee. It’s something to think about.’

Ondanks al die loftuitingen is geen uitreiking gepland.
Misschien komt dat doordat Dylan ook op woensdag 5 november optreedt in de Amsterdamse AFAS LIVE in kader van zijn Never Ending Tour.
