Albert Mazibuko is overleden op 5 april na een korte, niet nader omschreven ziekte. Het lid van Ladysmith Black Mambazo was 77 jaar oud.
Mazibuko werd in 1969 van de groep die door zijn neef Joseph Shabalala al in 1960 was opgericht en was er dus alle vijf keer bij dat ze een Grammy wonnen, tijdens de samenwerking met Paul Simon ten tijde van diens destijds even baanbrekende als controversiële album ‘Graceland’(1986) en op de soundtrack van ‘Simba’s Pride’, het vervolg op de speelfilm ‘The Lion King’.
De groep nam een jaar na zijn toetreding hun eerste album op en in 1973 werd hun ‘Amabutho’ de eerste gouden plaat op het Afrikaanse continent.
Hun handelsmerk was het a capella zingen van traditionele Zulunummers.
Mazibuko’s overlijden blijkt uit een bericht van de groep op Facebook: ‘It is with immense sadness that we tell you that our brother, Albert Mazibuko, has left us this Easter Sunday to be with his saviour in heaven.

Albert was a saint. He was kind to a fault. He loved traveling the world, spreading the mission and music of Ladysmith Black Mambazo. He never tired of talking about the group’s history and its desire to spread ‘Peace, Love and Harmony’ everywhere people had ears to listen.’:
