Op 2 oktober as. Komt een heuse ‘anniversary box’ uit van het debuut van Elvis Costello.

Deze jubileumversie van ‘My Aim Is True’ komt na 49 jaar opnieuw uit en is daarmee wonderlijk genoeg een jaar te vroeg.

De box zal vijf cd’s bevatten en telt dan ook 104 nummers, waarvan er 52 niet eerder uitkwamen: precies de helft dus.

Veel daarvan zullen demo’s, liveversies en outtakes zijn.

Ook bevat de box een geremasterde versie van het album met de originele analoge tapes als uitganspunt en maken de traditionele zeldzame foto’s, handgeschreven teksten en een nieuwe inleiding van Costello zelf er deel van uit. Ook onder anderen Nick Lowe, de producer van destijds, Roseanna Cash, Peter Wolf en Attractions Steve Nieve en Pete Thomas zetten trouwens hun gedachten op papier.

Costello zou maar liefst 72 pagina’s hebben gevuld met zijn gedachten…

De vijf cd’s hebben alle een eigen titel gekregen: uiteraard heet de eerste ‘My Aim Is True’ en de andere respectievelijk ‘The Blue Print’, ‘The Stranger in the House’ , ‘Becoming the Attractions’ en ‘Covered In Clover’.

‘The Blue Print’ bevat aanzetten voor songs die terecht zouden komen op Costello-albums als ‘Armed Forces’en ‘Get Happy!’

Op ‘The Stranger in the House’ staan songs die Costello eigenlijk voor anderen schreef, op ‘Becoming The Attractions’ zijn drummer Pete Tomas, bassist Bruce Thomas en toetsenist Steve Nieve te horen en ‘Covered in Clover’ is niet alleen een knipoog naar de Amerikaanse groep waarmee Costello zijn debuut opnam voor hij The Attractions vormde, maar ook naar het benefietconcert dat Costello en Clover in 2007 gaven in de Great American Music Hall in San Francisco.

Volgens het persbericht leek de heruitgave Costello aanvankelijk helemaal geen goed idee: ‘When first proposed, I thought the whole idea of celebrating a 50th Anniversary of My Aim Is True was preposterous. It made my teeth itch. It couldn’t just be set up like a venerable object in a glass case.’

Wat hem deed besluiten er toch mee in te stemmen, blijft onduidelijk: ‘Making my first record seemed like the beginning of something that I’d imagined for a
long time, before I had any sense of a potential audience, let alone the expectation and the assumptions of others about songs written and performed in mere minutes. Nevertheless, I raise a chaste glass to ‘My Aim Is True’ and all who sail in her.’
