Het Tribeca-festival heeft Bruce Springsteen de Harry Belafonte Voices for Social Justice Award toegekend.
De uitreiking werd ingeleid door filmster Robert De Niro, die in zijn introductie harde noten kraakte over de huidige Amerikaanse president Trump: ‘This is a man who knows how to use his voice.
He uses it to give voice to the powerless and he uses it to lead the resistance. He is fearless and direct. He knows what the problem is and he names it: Donald Trump. Donald J. Trump and his feckless enablers. That’s so important because this isn’t about reasonable disputes on policy: this is about the corruption and megalomania of one person. Bruce Springsteen puts a face on it, and he does it with the words of a poet.’
Dat leidde dan weer tot Springsteen’s opmerking dat niemand Trump beter beledigt dan De Niro.
De onderscheiding werd Springsteen uitgereikt door U2-zanger Bono, ook een uitgesproken Trump-criticaster.
Ook hij was uiteraard lovend over Springsteen:
‘Bruce Springsteen is America.
Bruce made poetry from the voices of the people and set that poetry to music. We honor him tonight as a musician and poet and as an activist and a patriot.’
Springsteen zei zich ‘een beetje verlegen’ te voelen onder de toekenning ervan en zei misschien met valse bescheidenheid: ‘I’m just a concerned citizen’.
Daarna droeg hij de onderscheiding op aan ‘all the citizens of Minneapolis and Los Angeles and Portland who stood against the federal invasion of their cities this year,’, zong samen met Bono en Patti Smith ‘People Have the Power’. Yot slot speelde hij solo en akoestisch ‘Land of Hope and Dreams’.
