Zowel Keith Richards als Mick Jagger heft zich kritisch uitgelaten over de staat waarin de Verenigde Staten zich politiek en maatschappelijk bevinden.
Richards noemde in een vraaggesprek met de Sunday Times de VS ‘a bit of a disappointment at the moment’. Dat zei hij over het ‘Foreign Tongues’-nummer ‘Ringing Hollow’, dat volgens hem gaat over een nostalgische liefdesrelatie met Amerika.
Ook Jagger sprak over die song. Dat deed hij in Mojo: het nummer zou niet allen over de Amerikaanse president Trump gaan, maar over Amerika in het algemeen en ‘je ervaringen ermee’:
‘The American Dream is intact for some people, and I’m sure we can find some wonderful immigrant stories that happened in the last 12 months, but we read about the decline of the American Empire.
It’s not the same at all, but there are a lot of questions about imperial overreach, and the lobbying systemThe money spent on an election is absurd – it’s not corruption per se but unnecessary. Is it indicative of this administration, or is it something has been happening a long time? In any case, it’s not the same place as it was.’
