Johnny Depp is niet alleen een fan van popmuziek, hij spelt ook regelmatig een potje gitaar. De laatste tijd sprong hij onder meer bij het podium bij Aerosmith, the Black Keys, Alice Cooper en Marilyn Manson. Ook heeft hij een platenlabel dat overigens een bijna slapend leven leidt.
Depp heeft veel van zijn muzikale vrienden opgetrommeld om een track op te namen of af te staan voor een dubbel-cd die in februari 2013 zal verschijnen: Son of Rogue’s Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys.
Hij werkt voor de plaat samen met producer Hal Wilner en Gore Verbinski, de producent van de Pirates of the Carribean-cyclus.
Net als de door ons nooit opgemerkte Rogue Gallery uit 2006 en opnieuw geheel in stijl met zijn piratenimago is het thema van de dubbelaar ‘zeeliederen’.
Onder anderen Tom Waits en Keith Richards, Nick Cave, Sean Lennon, Shane McGowan en Patti Smith, Michael Stipe en Courtney Love, Dr. John, Iggy Pop, Marianne Faithful en Richard Thompson Scene werken eraan mee, maar ook Frank Zappa stond een track af, al zullen dat zijn erven wel geweest zijn.
