Afgelopen winter ontving Wilco-voorman Jeff Tweedy Mavis Staples in Wilco’s studio The Loft in Staples’ thuisstad Chicago. Hij produceerde daar haar aankomende album You Are Not Alone en schreef bovendien twee nieuwe nummers voor de soul- en gospellegende.
Over die songs zei Staples: “He would listen to my conversations, my words, and then feed off that… The songs he wrote take me places I wouldn’t normally go. I wasn’t used to singing this way, but it felt really good.”
Zo schreef Tweedy het titelnummer You Are Not Alone. Het verhaal gaat dat Mavis Staples moest huilen bij de opnamen ervan, omdat ze haar vader in gedachten had, toen ze het nummer zong. Tweedy schreef ook het politiek getinte Only the Lord Knows.
Dat Tweedy Staples blijkbaar zo goed aanvoelde, kwam ook door zijn voorbereiding. “I have almost everything she’s ever recorded, and I dug back through that very thoroughly when I was given this job to do”, zegt Tweedy. “I thought that if I refreshed myself about where she’s been, it would help her figure out where she wanted to go. I wanted to be sure that we were making a record that she really wanted to make.”
