The Rutles was geen band, maar een gelegenheidsproject: Bonzo Dog Doodah-lid Neil Innes startte het met Monty Python’s Eric Idle in een sketch in de ‘Rutland weekend television’ op de BBC.
Idle noemde zich voor de gelegenheid Ron Nasty, Idle werd Dirk McQuickly, Rickie Fataar Stig O’Hara en John Halsey Barry Wom.
Zij doken de studio in om het werk van The Beatles even intelligent als ongekeerd na te spelen en brachten een naamloos album uit in 1990 en waren zo een ‘tribute band’ avant la letter, maar dan met eigen songs.
Zij waren de hoofdpersonen in de nepdocumentaire ‘All you need is cash’ met gastrollen van George Harrison, John Belushi, Dan Ackroyd, Mick Jagger en Paul Simon als zichzelf en schreven onder meer de nepklassiekers ‘Cheese & onions,’ ‘I must be in love,’ ‘Piggy in the middle,’ and ‘Ouch!’, terwijl 1996 Archaeology verscheen met als bezetting Innes, Halsey, Fataar en Ollie Halsall.
Met de melodieën en de akkoorden van Lennon en McCartney (en ja, inderdaad: soms ook die van George Harrison) schreven zij totaal nieuwe songs, die twee druppels water lijken op allerlei klassiekers van The Beatles.
In mei en juli gaan Innes (zang, gitaar, toetsen) en Halsey (zang, drums)op tournee door Engeland met nieuwe stand-ins ‘Rutling’ Ken Thornton (zang, leadgitaar), Phil Jackson (zang, toetsen) en Jay Goodrich (zang, bas).
Het persbericht verhaalt bijna onvertaalbaar: ‘They will be bringing their own unique brand of musical ‘Pork Pies’ to the beleaguered and bewildered British Isles. No other ‘Tribute’ band distributes joy or writes their own songs or tops the charts of ‘Make Believe’ quite like these jolly foot-tapping Economists of Truth. By ‘Popular Demand’, these Grandees of Delusion will be Taking Back Control of Bare-Faced Fibbing, saluting the Sovereignty of of Silliness and ceremoniously reinstating the Obvious.’
