Gisteravond is op het Tribeca Film Festival de documentaire ‘1-800-ON-HER-OWN’ in première gegaan, een film over de loopbaan van singer-songwriter Ani DiFRanco.
De film is geregisseerd door Dana Flor, die in het persbericht onder meer schrijft dat ze documentaire wilde maken ‘not only because she’s a punk-folk icon and a masterful storyteller who makes the personal political, the political personal, and all of it universal. I made it because Ani embodies the idea that you don’t need to ask for permission. You can reject categorization, resist definition and refuse to play by other people’s rules. Hers is so undeniably a story of our time.

Dat is allemaal waar, maar DiFranco is ook een singer-songwriter die op haar tientallen albums ongelooflijk mooie songs speelde en zong met vaak zeer getalenteerde begeleiders en in haar teksten indrukwekkend harde noten kraakte, waarin ze in de beste traditie het politieke en het persoonlijke verbond.
Ze is al heel lang een ster in haar eigen universum, maar zou het als geen ander verdienen door te breken bij een groter publiek, maar haar nog altijd vaak compromisloze standpunten en idem nummers zullen dat wel tot in de eeuwigheid onmogelijk maken, terwijl haar nieuwe album ‘Unprecendeted Sh!t‘ook lang niet haar beste is…
